Ghosts of Cité Soleil and Hijos de la guerra

Something I find kind of interesting  is the proliferation of gang violence around the world. Especially as its kind of amazing how many people are sucked into "wars" where winning / victory often has no real benefit. Even if you kill everyone in an opposing gang (though this never happens and new people keep joining) where you live will still be poor and you will still be at the bottom of the pile and yet the vicious cycle seems to continue. Of course drug profits are sometimes an excuse, but realistically not EVRYONE can be a high rolling drug dealer, most of the casualties gained nothing and lost everything (as they are dead).

Two films which cover this phenomena in two of the world most poverty stricken nations are heading to the screen. The first is playing in the UK thanks to Revolver Entertainment and is titled Ghosts of Cité Soleil. The documentary filmed in the Republic of Haiti which is on the Caribbean Island of Hispaniola. The French speaking nations borders the popular holiday destination (and pretty dam poor itself) Spanish speaking Dominican Republic. The film follows to brothers both gang leader (In different gangs) 2Pac and Bily and takes a trip into one of the most violent place's on earth. The other film is Hijos de la guerra this time the impoverished nation is El Salvador. The documentary takes a look at Mara Salvatrucha AKA MS-13 which is arguably the worlds largest and most violent street gang. The gang which was started by Salvadorian refugees in LosAngeles has not only spread across the US outstripping the growth of every other established street gang there it has also spread back to El Salvador where its endless war with rival gang the 18th Street gang (Also imported from L.A.) is making the nation one of the most dangerous on the planet. The 18th Street gang was the subject of the 2006 "Wide angle" TV documentary 18 with a Bullet. Mara Salvatrucha was featured in an episode of cult UK TV show Ross Kemp on Gangs.
