Diego Bernal's 2009 set For Corners was one of my favourite albums of 2009. What's more it was totally free to download. His new set Besides... has hit the web and once again his samples draw on dusty untapped south Texas crates, however unlike For Corners this album is maybe a little more instrumental hip hop in the vain of Shadow than it is Dilla. That's not a bad thing though and once again its on heavy rotation in my home. Another great bit of work from the "Civil rights attorney by day and beat producer by night".
November sees the launch of an exciting competition for new producers, with the chance to win a 3 single deal with a top label, inclusion on an exclusive compilation album and a host of prizes. The competition is to be judged by a panel of leading industry figures including Timo Maas, Orbital, D Ramirez, James Zabiela, Steve Mac, Meat Katie and Dylan Rhymes....

LP Cover Lover | The world's greatest LP album covers, and 45s too. Ahh the lost art of the LP cover, convenient as the digital medium is there was something special about the LP / 45 inch single. Part of that was the artwork, for many the artwork on the records they bought was once the most exposure they got to photographic artwork and illustration. Some good, some bad and some weird / kitsch enough to end up on lpcoverlover.com
Digital downloads are truly a wonder of our modern time, affording us freedom from the dark days when we had to fork out for an album when all we wanted was one or two tracks. However, there have been certain curtailments imposed upon our freedom thanks to the ball ache that is DRM. Well, thankfully, Play.com have seen fit to follow 7digital down the DRM-free route, adding titles from such big players as Sony BMG and EMI to their existing DRM-free catalogue at PlayDigital. Further to that, Play.com have entered into a certain Clash of the Titans by making a move to significantly undercut existing charges at iTunes. Head of PlayDigital, Wendy Snowdon, had these fighting words to say:
"We now have an offer to rival that of iTunes, yet in a format that gives the consumer choice and at a more appealing price. This site has been a phenomenal success since launch and now, armed with the full back catalogue and current releases from the all the majors, we are fantastically placed to take a bigger bite of the apple."
Well, you heard the lady. I think that makes it Round 1 to PlayDigital, don't you?
