It's not unusual for an artist to be inspired by a panorama, but when you consider this particular Panorama is a club in Berlin and Laurent Garnier is the artist in question, things become a little less usual. Panoramix is a titularly affectionate nod to the birth place of this really rather special Techno track, the release of which proved the fruits of the combination of two beautiful minds.
It was Dixon of record label Innervisions who, upon hearing a rough mix of the apty titled A-side track Back To My Roots at the Panorama club, was rightly blown away, suggesting a release on the label. Dixon says of this rare moment "When Laurent played Back To My Roots at Panorama, I immediately had the feeling that I was listening to a classic. It's a very unique timeless production. Not hip, not modern, not "old school". It is also a 12-minute journey that is worth playing for that long. We were very happy that Laurent told me straight away in the club that he would be cool with releasing this EP on our label… and let's not forget about THAT B-side.'
And so a star was born; Back To My Roots bore the inspired B-side, Panoramix, and musical history was made. Panoramix is a track with leanings towards the 'intelligent' side of electronica, and, whilst it has it's feet firmly based in the more classily euphoric upbeat, it's well within the realms of tuning in and tuning out. Bar the ubiquitous House/Techno kick-snare beat, this is a glorious 11 minutes featuring a meaty build-up and smart breakdown before the remainder kicks in with an avengeance of delicious noises and a smattering of Latin beats. This is exactly the type of track that makes me yearn deeply to dj in the downstairs of a dingy, cavernous bar/club to the point of an ache to which I have no resistance.
